Monday Intermediate Game Development Lab Spring 2025
Designing with RPG Maker: Heroic Quests & Villainous Lairs
In this class, students will use RPG Maker, a powerful and beginner-friendly game development tool, to create their own heroic adventure. They will design detailed maps for towns, forests, and dungeons, build unique characters using the Character Generator, and craft engaging storylines with interactive quests. Students will also explore RPG mechanics such as turn-based combat, puzzles, and progression systems. By the end of the course, each student will have a fully playable game showcasing their creativity, ready to share with family and friends.
Class Objectives:
- Introduction to RPG Maker: Get familiar with RPG Maker’s tools and interface to design, build, and customize your game without prior coding experience.
- World-Building and Map Design: Create detailed environments for towns, forests, dungeons, and other settings using the Map Editor, selecting graphics to bring your world to life.
- Character Creation: Use RPG Maker’s Character Generator to design unique heroes, NPCs, and villains, customizing their appearances, personalities, and roles in your game.
- DQuest and Story Development: Learn to craft an engaging storyline with interactive quests, branching dialogues, and immersive narrative elements.
- Turn-Based Combat and Battle Mechanics: Design and implement turn-based battles, create enemy types, and fine-tune difficulty to keep gameplay engaging and challenging.
- Puzzle and Trap Design: Integrate puzzles, traps, and hidden areas into your game to enhance exploration and provide additional challenges for players.
- Playtesting and Polishing: Test and refine your game by receiving feedback, making improvements, and preparing your final game for release to family and friends.

Coding: RPG Maker uses a command system and editable parameters, users will be able to rapidly create systems without any sort of coding knowledge. JavaScript can be added for advanced users but is not part of this course.
